The UK is “giving away too much and too easily” to the EU in the negotiations.
These were the last words as Brexit Secretary by David Davis, the man who led the negotiations in the United Kingdom to leave the EU.
His resignation came after a different opinion with Theresa May on what was discussed during last Friday cabinet.
David Davis also added that he was no longer the best person to deliver the agreed Brexit plan.
The prime minister has disagreed with his choice and the resignation resulted to make the things worse in trying to persuade the “Eurosceptics” to support his Brexit proposal.
According to Davis, last Friday agreement leaves, therefore, some doubts on the position of the United Kingdom after Brexit, he added “The general direction of policy will leave us in at best a weak negotiating position, and possibly an inescapable one”. The fear of uncertainty, as the UK is due to leave the European Union on 29 March 2019, comes because both sides have yet to agree on how trade will work between the UK and the EU afterwards.
Later during the day, also the Foreign Minister Boris Johnson resigned. Mr Johnson said the Brexit “dream is dying, suffocated by needless self-doubt”.
The outside perception is that Friday’s meeting gave a rise of disappointment between the coalition. This turmoil makes the intentions promoted by May in the Brexit key even more questionable.
