Protection from eviction for commercial tenants

February 4, 2020

Commercial tenants who cannot pay their rent because of Coronavirus will be protected from eviction.

These measures will mean no business will automatically forfeit their lease and be evicted of their premises if they miss a rent payment up until 30 June.

The government may extend this period if needed.

Rent payments will not be interrupted. As a result of this measure, all commercial tenants will still be liable for the rent. Although, commercial tenants will not be forced out if they are unable to pay rent.

All commercial tenants in England, Wales and Northern Ireland can have access to the scheme. No action is required to be eligible and businesses will be able to defer rental payments without applying for it.
